130th Anniversary Reception at St Hilda’s: March 19th 2020

As you may have seen in the most recent issue of The Slab, we are inviting Guild members and our anniversary supporters to a special evening Reception on Thursday, 19th March 2020 at our centre in East London. This reception evening, starting at 6:30pm, will have opportunities for networking, drinks and canapés, along with an exhibition of St Hilda’s East’s work and a screening of the charity’s brand new Anniversary film. We are delighted to announce that both Eve Jardine-Young, Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, and Olga Senior, Chairman of Guild, will join us and speak.

This event will be a wonderful way to meet old Guild friends and make new ones! Our centre is situated in the heart of Shoreditch, near Liverpool Street, and is minutes away from notable restaurants such as Shoreditch House, Dishoom, Lyle’s and Rochelle Canteen – providing some great spots for dinner after coming along to the reception evening.

This event is free, but we are selling £10 raffle tickets, with the chance to win some fantastic luxury prizes. From a fishing experience to champagne tea at The Dorchester, there are prizes for everyone! If you would like to purchase raffle tickets, please get in touch either with Andrea Shortell at andrea@sthildas.org.uk or with Caroline Harris in the Guild Office. If you are unable to make it on the night, please still do purchase raffle tickets as we can liaise with you should you win. It is a great way to help support us in our 130th year!

St Hilda's East have set up an EventBrite page for people to sign up if you would like to attend (free but the raffle option is there as well): https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/st-hildas-east-130th-anniversary-reception-tickets-85834735003?utm_term=eventurl_text

130th St Hilda’s East Anniversary Appeal

We were absolutely delighted to host a very successful fundraising evening on the 1st October at the Mercer’s Hall. Following this event our Anniversary Appeal now stands at £79,706.92. Our aim is to raise a further £50,293 to reach our ambitious £130,000 target by the end of March 2020. We greatly appreciate any contribution, large or small! Please do consider making a contribution if you can. Donations can be made by following this link: https://bit.ly/2CO4J1v

We are hugely indebted to the The Mercers’ Company, who not only provided the historic Mercers’ Hall for the 1st October occasion, but also food and drink, so that all the proceeds from the evening went to St Hilda’s East. It was a joyous celebration with Patron of St Hilda's East, Carolyn Kirby, speaking, and an inspiring performance by St Hilda’s Choir.

St Hilda’s East Christmas Cards

St Hilda’s has some beautiful Christmas cards for sale! These feature drawings by children from our local school in East London, Virginia Primary, and were designed by Cheltenham Ladies’ College. They are ideal for friends and family, and would be a wonderful addition to your Christmas card collection! We are selling them for £6.00 for a pack of 5 cards including P&P, with all proceeds going to St Hilda’s East. If you wish to purchase some, please get in touch with Andrea at andrea@sthildas.org.uk or send payment (cheques payable to St Hilda's East) to Andrea Shortell, St Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, London, E2 7EY.

JULY

Last weekend, St Hilda’s East hosted a Street Party on Rochelle Street on the historic Boundary Estate, celebrating 130 years of serving the community. With a DJ, traditional Bangladeshi dancers, ceremonial cake-cutting, games, a raffle, and an appearance from Tower Hamlets Mayor John Biggs (pictured below centre), the day brought together a diverse group of the local community and was a great success despite the little bit of rain experienced at the beginning of the day! We also thank those CLC students who volunteered their time to assist us on the day.

Our next major event is the 130th Anniversary Dinner, to be held at The Mercers’ Hall in London on 1st October. CLC principal Eve Jardine-Young, Council Chair Libby Basset, Chair of Guild Olga Senior, and Patron of St Hilda’s East Carolyn Kirby will be attending as our guests. Set to be a hugely enjoyable evening with live entertainment, a performance from our Older People’s Project Choir, a live auction, and more, we have a number of tickets available for purchase. Thanks to the generous support of The Mercers, who are kindly providing use of their historic hall and food for the evening for free, all proceeds made on the evening will go directly to St Hilda’s East. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please get in touch with Andrea on the email below.

We are pleased to announce that we are hosting a reception evening for Guild members on 19th March 2020 at St Hilda’s East Community Centre. JUNE

A St Hilda’s East 130th Anniversary Team took part in the London-wide sponsored 10k Legal Walk on Monday 17th June to raise much-needed funds for our Advice Service. We are incredibly grateful for all the support that we have received for this event. We have raised just over £4,000, with some more sponsorship monies still coming in!

MARCH

St Hilda’s East will officially launch its 130th Anniversary celebrations on 1st April! They have been working hard over the last few months to organise a series of events throughout the year that will bring together the community, old and new, to celebrate this milestone of St Hilda’s East. From inter generational games to a street party, they are excited to be taking this opportunity to reflect on what St Hilda’s East has achieved in the last 130 years.

Alongside their fundraising dinner at the Mercers’ Hall on 1st October (kindly made available by The Mercers’ Company), they are organising a series of smaller fundraising events over the course of this exciting year. For those not able to attend the celebrations there will be other ways to mark the 130th anniversary and support the work of St Hilda’s East. They are launching an Anniversary Appeal to enable them to continue the much needed work in the East End of London into the next 130 years. Donations small or large are very much appreciated and can be made to the 130th Anniversary Fund; Bank: Natwest, Sort code: 60-80-01, Account no: 37331760. Thank you.

If you would like to keep up to date with what they are getting up to in the months ahead, please do follow them on their social media accounts: https://www.instagram.com/sthildaseast/ / www.twitter.com/StHildasEast / and check out their newly designed website: www.sthildas.org.uk. FEBRUARY

Established by the Cheltenham Ladies’ College Guild, St Hilda’s East is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. A range of opportunities are being organised to celebrate this wonderful landmark.

A special 130th fundraising dinner will be held at the prestigious Mercers’ Hall in the City of London on Tuesday 1st October. The Mercers’ Company is kindly donating use of its hall and paying for food for the occasion for St Hilda’s, and all funds raised will go to St Hilda’s East, enabling it to continue its much needed work into the future. St Hilda’s are selling event tickets for £500 (with discounts for tables) which includes a wonderful three course meal, wine and entertainment.

We plan to hold a more modestly priced anniversary event for Guild members, and details of this will be made available in upcoming editions of Guild News. We very much look forward to sharing St Hilda’s East historic birthday with Guild members! Other events during the course of the year will include a community ‘Olympic games’ in our community centre during Easter and a summer street party.

For those not able to come to our celebrations there will be other ways to mark our  130th anniversary and support the work of St Hilda’s East. Donations small or large are very much appreciated and can be made to our 130th Anniversary Fund; Bank: Natwest, Sort code: 60-80-01, Account no: 38331760. Thank you.
