Can you help the PGC?
For the past couple of years the Professional Guidance Centre (PGC) has been hosting events focusing on industries and professions. After the great success last year of our new networking events format we are pleased to announce that we will continue with the programme this academic year. We have entitled this Those Who Dare, this is to encourage students to dare to explore beyond their comfort zone, to follow their hearts, to do something different from their relatives, to go against the grain, to challenge expectations, in short to strive to find their own path to be fulfilled in their lives. For this we invite people from any career path with any professional experience to join us and share with our students their careers challenges and rewards.
This is what one of our students wrote after attending one of the events last year.
As students, it's sometimes easy to feel constricted by a very narrow view of success. After speaking to the many guests, it is evident that success holds many different shapes and forms. Though everyone differed greatly in backgrounds and lifestyles, from a master's in Archaeology to not going to university at all, what brought all the guests together is their clear passion for what they do. This passion, this drive that they shared was a product of them taking a risk, daring to do something different, at some point in their lives.
I think I speak for many when I say the evening was incredibly inspiring. Being able to hear someone's story in person is vastly different from reading it from a career pamphlet; Even if we weren't particularly interested in taking on a specific career, there was something valuable to be gained from every conversation. This year we will be holding three events on Friday evenings (17th November and 1st March starting at 6.00pm expected to finish by 8.30pm and 17th May starting at 4.00pm expected to finish by 6.00pm) when guests will have the opportunity to speak to small group of students for a few minutes at a time on a rotation basis.
If you are free on any of these dates we would love to hear from you. Also, if you know someone else that may enjoy joining us we would be delighted to invite them too. We look forward to hearing from you.
