CLC Golf Society 2022
AUTUMN OPEN
This year our Autumn Open took place at Broome Manor Golf Club in Swindon on Wednesday 5th October 2022. Rain was forecast leading up to the day, but luckily it was not too heavy and we started off in the dry and ended in the dry so that was a bonus!
Seven CLC members and one honorary member (a great friend of Liz MacDonald who happens to be a member at Broome Manor) enjoyed our day at the Club and we were treated to some excellent sandwiches and cake afterwards.
From left to right:
Caroline Dixon (May), Amanda Marshall (Oakland), Lorraine Morgan (Hughes), Caroline Leslie, Elizabeth Holbrook (Holroyd), Liz MacDonald (St Leger Carter) and Sarah Nannestad (Nutter).
The winner of our competition was Amanda with 33 points, with nearest the pin going to Liz and the longest drive to Lorraine. We also had a team competition (the teams were not drawn until after everyone had finished) and the team with the highest combined points (65 points) was Caroline Leslie and Sian Nickson (our honorary member) so congratulations to them and all the other winners.
Looking ahead to 2023, we are hoping to continue our annual match versus Sherborne Old Girls but at the time of writing we are still waiting to hear where it will take place and on which date, as it is Sherborne’s turn to choose the venue. Details will be emailed out as soon as they are received.
However, the date for next year’s Silver Tassie (Independent Old Girls fourball better ball competition) has been received and it is Monday 22nd May 2023. Further details and a request for numbers will be sent out early next year. It would be good to enter two teams of four again as we did this year.
Following circulation of the report from The Silver Tassie (which was also circulated on the Guild Facebook Group) we have gained four new members, which is great news. If anyone else would like to join the Golf Society and would enjoy playing at other courses, whatever your handicap, please contact Caroline Dixon, (caroline.dixon1956@gmail.com).

CLC AT THE TASSIE
The Silver Tassie competition took place this year at the Berkshire Golf Club on Monday 23rd May 2022. Once again we entered two teams although it was touch and go with some last minute changes due to injury. As an added bonus this year we were delighted to receive some rather smart polo shirts with the CLC badge and ‘CLC Golf Society’ embroidered on the front which the CLC Guild very kindly purchased for us. A huge thank you to the Guild for doing this – it gave us all a real boost!
Unlike at South Winchester for our match against Sherborne Old Girls, the weather remained dry and, although demanding, the course was a pleasure to play and in great condition. The CLC teams, whilst not collecting any silverware, did themselves proud in their new polo shirts and look forward to wearing them with pride again next year!

The Society’s Autumn Open this year will take place on 5th October at Broome Manor Golf Club in Swindon. As it says on its website “Broome Manor Golf Club is one of the best examples of a public golf course in the UK and voted the Number 1 Public Course in the South West of England for the last 5 Years. Offering exquisite views over the beautifully maintained landscape just to the south of Swindon Old Town. Broome Manor Golf Club is perfect for those looking for good value golf in Wiltshire.” If anyone would be interested in playing in this event, please contact Caroline Dixon (see email below) with all the dates they are available.
It would be good to see some new faces at our Golf matches (as well as our more familiar faces, of course!). We have almost 40 members, and are always looking for new members whatever your handicap, so if you enjoy playing golf and would like to play at some different courses, please contact Caroline Dixon (caroline.dixon1956@gmail.com).

ANNUAL MATCH VERSUS SHERBORNE OLD GIRLS
At last we were able to resume our annual match versus Sherborne Old Girls on Thursday 31st March 2022 at South Winchester Golf Club where we had played back in 2019. Those of you who played in that match will remember that the weather was horrendous that day and only 9 holes were played so it was decided, therefore, to return to South Winchester this year to, hopefully, play the full 18 holes. Both sides put out four teams of two (with an honorary CLC girl standing in!), which was tremendous, and the weather looked promising!
Well… all I can say is that we got further than we did in 2019 but sadly the weather turned against us once again so only one match completed the full 18 holes and three matches had to stop before reaching the end! The score was 2½ to CLC and 1½ to Sherborne (the three incomplete matches agreed to call it a draw). And just to show how bad it was, here are some photos!
However, we were all smiling when we came in and South Winchester put on a fabulous tea for us (with some additional plates of chips to warm us up!) so many thanks to Lorraine for hosting us at her club again. Next year Sherborne will be choosing a venue for our annual match – let’s hope the weather is kinder!
