Guild USA College Event

On Wednesday 6th October the Professional Guidance Centre hosted a panel of four Guild members to talk about their experience of applying to US Colleges. The panel members were: Lauren Paver-Thompson (2021, Bellairs) studying at Berkeley, Dinara Bolat (2021, Sidney Lodge) studying at Yale, Antonina Fastova (2021, St Austin's) studying at UChicago and Siobhan Pierce (2012, Bayshill) who studied at Dickinson College and University of Maine.

Ekaternia Linde (SFC1, Beale) joined the talk and wrote “All the speakers emphasized the importance of doing a lot of research to ensure that the US College you’re choosing is the right place for you. It was advised to thoroughly read the websites: look up the offered curricular, future opportunities, location, living system and other items. This information will also be beneficial in the process of writing the entrance essay.

The essays are a very important part of your application. Some universities will ask you to write about a certain topic, others will give you the freedom of choice. No matter the topic, you want to make sure that your piece is memorable. It has to stand out from other students.

The question about extracurricular activities was raised several times throughout the talk. There is no right combination. The reviewers want to get to know your personality, so be authentic.

Getting into university is an important moment in life. It is the place in which you will spend the next several years. Devote time to research and the process of completing your application. Make sure that you get into the place which is the right fit for you.”

I would like to extend a special thanks to the four Guild members who gave up their time and we look forward to hosting more US Guild events in the future.
